In order to live a happy successful life, we must all have
goals. Goals help us to focus on what needs to be done and the important things in life. The biggest enemy to achieving one's goals is distractions. TVs, social media, procrastination,
negativity, having too many projects and others are just some of the
distractions that deter you from achieving your goals. In business, tolerating
such kind of distractions means failure of the business. So, how do these distractions
prevent us from achieving our goals and how can we overcome them?
Social media
Social media has proven to be an important tool in our lives,
especially for businesses. Through social media, you connect with friends and
one can advertise brands to ensure the success
of their businesses. On the other hand, the use of social media can be
destructive to one's goals if not
controlled. Spending a lot of time on
social media platforms doing unconstructive things such as liking people’s
pictures only consumes the time you would have used to cross out one of your
objectives on your goal list. Before engaging
in social media activities, ask yourself, is it really necessary? Will it help
or prevent me from achieving my goals?
Procrastination
Procrastination is the thief
of time. Once you set out to achieve your goals within a specified period of
time, it is good to have self-discipline and follow it to the
letter. Imagine you woke up one morning and decided
to tidy your room by noon only to switch on the TV and find your
favorite show is on. Most people in such a situation will say “I will do it
after the show”. To their surprise, another show they like follows. Eventually,
it will be nightfall before you know it.
As a business person or any other person, ask yourself whether the activity
that is making you push your goals forward is worth it. If not, why do it?
Procrastination only leads you to miss important opportunities and having
regrets once the time is up.
Procrastination is like a credit card: It’s a lot of fun
until you get the bill. –Christopher Parker, English Actor
One may think that negativity is not qualified as a
distraction. Well, here is the sad truth. In order to achieve your goals, you
ought to be optimistic. Allowing negative
thoughts in your mind only brews fear, doubt
and failure. To accomplish your goals avoid being pessimistic and think of success
only. Avoid negative minded people or family and friends that are not
supportive of your work. The moment you do this, you will look back and smile because
you will have achieved your goals.
Too many projects
Mostly when dealing with business related ideas, people have
too many thoughts and projects all aimed at gaining profit. Sometimes, these
projects are the cause of failure. When setting your goals take time to evaluate how having too many projects
will help you in the long run. If after evaluation you find that they will have
a negative impact, cut off some of the project particularly
those that can wait. “Rome wasn’t built
in a day” so you don’t have to overwhelm yourself in trying to have so many
goals to accomplish in a relatively short period of time. Accomplishing goals
is about doing your best in working at a high level of quality.
It’s not enough to be
busy, so are the ants. The question is, what are we busy about?-Henry D.
Thoreau
People who fail to meet their goals normally have lost hope.
Associating yourself with such people
diverts your focus from the bull’s eye. If they are not helping you attain your
goals, why have them around? Seek people that are like minded perhaps having a
support group where you encourage one another with the goals that you have set.
These are some of the distraction and the reasons why you
have failed to meet your goals. If something is standing in your way of
achieving goals, shed it off.
